Cardboard Cube

Having pupled the cardboard, added rusty steel filings and formed it into a cube, it was now time to let it dry and reveal the results. Unfortunately, unlike concrete, cardboard does not ‘set’ with a chemical reaction and the only thing that makes it dry out is time. The water has to evaporate and given the cool weather, I resorted to putting it in the oven on a really low temperature. I do not recommend this – it stank! Once the block was dry I was really pleased with the materiality of the outcome. The rust from the steel filings bleeding into the cardboard pulp looked amazing. I think this is a one off piece. I did try it again using broken eggshells, however, it was really dull and just looked like cardboard and eggshells, there was no tension in the work. I don’t think I will include it in my final degree show, but it may be an addition to my ‘collection of curioristies’ as shown in my blog post: https://joanneforrest.org/more-encaustic/
